Their hands and feet may not be soft or adorned with beautiful nails, but they tell the story of tireless labor and the effort they invest in their daily routines—work that still leaves them content at the end of the day. The painting captures the simplicity of rural life. The man is shown sharpening his sickle on a stick using a stone—a creative use of natural objects to serve his needs. Rather than complaining about what they lack, rural people make the most of what they have, finding ingenious solutions taught to them by nature itself. Rural life is undeniably filled with challenges and hard work, and this theme is at the heart of the piece.
