Art, ideas, and meaningful dialogue
In the digital age, art history is no longer confined to museum walls or academic texts. A new generation of creators is reshaping how audiences discover and experience art online.
For this edition of the Elisium Art Curator Spotlight Series, we are delighted to feature Nikola Majdanac, the creator behind the widely followed Instagram page @daily.impressionists.
Through carefully curated reels and posts, Nikola has built a vibrant digital community celebrating Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, introducing iconic painters such as Monet, Degas, Renoir, and Toulouse-Lautrec to a new generation of art lovers.
What began as a personal curiosity has now grown into a global platform dedicated to keeping one of art history’s most beloved movements alive online.
Where It All Began: From Toulouse-Lautrec to Daily Impressionists
Nikola’s journey into the world of Impressionism began with a fascination for Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
While researching the artist online, Nikola searched Instagram hoping to find a page dedicated to Lautrec’s paintings. Surprisingly, none existed.
So he decided to create one himself.
The page initially started under the name Daily Lautrec, where Nikola shared photographs and artworks by the French painter. Within weeks, the account began attracting hundreds of followers curious about the artist’s life and work.
However, Nikola soon realized that focusing on a single artist limited the amount of content he could share. That realization led to an important turning point: expanding the page to cover the broader Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movement.
The result was Daily Impressionists—a page that would soon grow into one of the most active digital spaces celebrating Impressionist art.
Celebrating the timeless power of art
Bringing Impressionism to the Digital Generation
One of the most remarkable aspects of Nikola’s work is how he makes nineteenth-century paintings feel relevant in today’s fast-paced digital environment.
Each post is carefully constructed to capture attention while maintaining respect for the artwork itself. From the choice of music in reels to the tone of captions, Nikola approaches every piece of content as a storytelling opportunity.
As he explains:
“I make the kind of content that I would want to see when I open Instagram.”
By combining strong visuals, poetic descriptions, and thoughtful pairings of music and imagery, Nikola transforms historical paintings into immersive digital experiences.
Why Impressionism Still Captivates the World
During our conversation, Nikola reflected on why Impressionism continues to resonate so strongly with audiences today.
For him, the answer lies in the movement’s ability to celebrate everyday life.
“The Impressionists show that a book on a table is equally as important as a grand castle.”
This idea marked a radical shift in art history. Instead of focusing on royalty or mythological scenes, Impressionist painters turned their attention toward ordinary moments—sunlit gardens, café gatherings, riversides, and quiet domestic scenes.
Combined with luminous colors and expressive brushwork, these subjects created paintings that felt joyful, immediate, and human.
Nikola believes this emotional accessibility is why Impressionism remains timeless:
“When people see an Impressionist painting, it often lifts their mood. There are flowers, gardens, sunlight, people enjoying themselves. It’s impossible not to feel something.”
A perspective shaped by great art
Learning to See Paintings Differently
Spending hundreds of days studying Impressionist works has profoundly shaped how Nikola experiences art.
One of his most valuable insights is surprisingly simple: look before you read.
“When you see a painting, first observe it without any information. Look at the brushwork, the colors, the details. Only afterwards should you read about it.”
By doing this, viewers allow themselves to experience the artwork directly rather than through someone else’s interpretation.
Nikola is currently expanding this philosophy in his upcoming book The Impressionist Eye, which will guide readers on how to truly observe and understand Impressionist paintings.
Consistency, Passion, and Building a Community
Behind the success of @daily.impressionists lies remarkable dedication.
Nikola posts every day—often sharing both a painting and a reel. Maintaining that level of consistency requires discipline, but for him it feels natural because of his passion for the subject.
As he puts it:
“When you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work.”
His advice for anyone hoping to build an art platform online is simple: love the subject, stay consistent, and share what genuinely excites you.
