Signature Artist Feature | Elisium Art
Mumbai-based artist Piyali Sarkar brings a vibrant narrative to contemporary art through her deeply expressive paintings inspired by the cultural richness of India. Her work draws from the rhythms of daily life — people, festivals, traditions, and shared moments that define the social fabric of Indian communities.
A traveler at heart, Piyali regularly journeys across different states to absorb the colors, rituals, and stories that shape regional cultures. These experiences become the foundation of her artistic practice. Through painting, she documents the emotions, gestures, and everyday interactions she observes — from laughter between friends to the expressive movements of people in conversation.
Her work reflects a celebration of Indian art traditions within a contemporary visual language, transforming ordinary moments into vivid compositions that feel both nostalgic and alive.
From Computer Science to the World of Contemporary Art
Piyali’s path into art was not conventional. She originally studied computer science, later spending time in the United States, where visits to galleries and conversations with artists deepened her curiosity about painting.
While living in North Carolina, she began attending workshops and art classes, gradually realizing that painting offered the most meaningful way to capture the moments and emotions she observed in everyday life.
“I wanted to capture those moments and give future generations a glimpse of how people lived, celebrated, and connected in India.”
Returning to India, she committed fully to painting — transforming what began as exploration into a dedicated artistic journey.

The Classic India Series: Painting Stories of a Living Culture
At the heart of Piyali Sarkar’s work lies her ongoing Classic India Series, a body of paintings that explores the richness of Indian cultural life.
Her compositions often feature multiple figures interacting within detailed architectural spaces. Through these scenes, she captures the layered rhythms of Indian society — families gathering, festivals unfolding, and everyday life moving through shared spaces.
Women frequently appear as central figures in her work. For Piyali, female characters embody depth, strength, and complexity, making them powerful storytellers within her compositions.
These paintings are not meant to deliver fixed interpretations. Instead, they invite viewers to form their own emotional connection with the scenes.
“Painting is not about explaining a story. It’s about creating a moment where the viewer feels something.”
Bold Color and the Spirit of Maximalism
In an era where minimalism often dominates contemporary aesthetics, Piyali Sarkar embraces a very different visual philosophy — maximalism.
Her paintings are filled with bold palettes, intricate compositions, and layered narratives. Bright reds, blues, yellows, and greens interact dynamically, echoing the vibrancy of Indian festivals, clothing, and architecture.
For Piyali, maximalism is not simply a stylistic choice but a cultural reflection.
India, with its diversity of traditions, textures, and celebrations, naturally invites visual abundance. Through maximalist compositions, she seeks to mirror the richness of everyday life — a world filled with people, animals, architecture, and nature all existing in dynamic harmony.
Her paintings often include animals alongside human figures, emphasizing the interconnected relationship between society and nature.
Growth, Recognition, and Artistic Momentum
Over the past several years, Piyali Sarkar’s career has seen remarkable momentum.
Her Classic India Series has been exhibited in several prominent galleries and art events across India. Among the highlights of her journey are solo exhibitions at respected venues such as the Academy of Fine Arts in Kolkata and Bajaj Art Gallery in Mumbai, as well as recognition through exhibitions associated with Lalit Kala Akademi.
She has also participated in notable group exhibitions including the Indian Art Festival and shows at Gaganendranath Tagore Art Centre.
One particularly meaningful work in her recent practice depicts the historical story of the White Tiger discovered by Maharaja Martand Singh in Madhya Pradesh, reflecting the relationship between heritage, wildlife, and cultural identity.
Beyond gallery exhibitions, her work has also reached audiences through online platforms and collaborative projects with brands, demonstrating how contemporary Indian art continues to evolve across both physical and digital spaces.
