"Alquimia Viva" by Tania Collazos. A vibrant abstract that captures the living alchemy of colour and form.
Over the years, I’ve spoken to thousands of collectors — from seasoned collectors to first-time buyers. What always strikes me is that the question is rarely why someone wants to buy art. It’s how to begin.
If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “I wouldn’t even know where to start,” trust me — you’re not alone. And here’s the good news: starting your own art collection doesn’t require a deep wallet or an art history degree. All it takes is curiosity… and a willingness to feel.
The first piece I ever brought home wasn’t expensive, but I still remember the way it made me pause. That quiet connection — that emotional pull — is where every meaningful collection begins.
Start with What Moves You
Before thinking about value or investment, take a moment to ask yourself: What kind of art speaks to me? Is it the wild colour strokes of abstract expressionism? Or the calm of botanical realism?
At Elisium Art, we feature emerging and established artists across a spectrum of styles. If you are drawn to nature-inspired works, you might explore Martin’s collection of botanical realism — his detailed florals are as captivating as they are calming. On the other hand, if bold and modern is more your style, our Contemporary Abstract Collection might be the perfect place to begin.
If you’re curious about the unique voice of a contemporary Latin American artist, don’t miss Tania Collazos’ Alquimia Viva, a stunning resin art piece, measuring 20×15.7×1.5 inches, evokes a captivating seascape. The abstract design features a mesmerising blend of vibrant greens, pinks, and blues, creating a dynamic underwater scene.
It’s not about what’s “trending.” It’s about what resonates with your story.

Build Slowly and Intentionally
Many new collectors feel pressured to buy multiple pieces quickly, but trust me, a collection is something you build over time. One artwork at a time. One connection at a time.
At Elisium Art, we guide collectors with our personalised art advisory service, helping you select artworks that align with your taste, space, and lifestyle. Whether it’s a soft watercolour for a reading nook or a bold statement piece above a fireplace, every placement is intentional. You can also browse curated themes, such as our Indigenous Art collection, or take advantage of our personalised Art Advisory — perfect for discovering different voices and visions from around the globe.

Don’t Let Budget Hold You Back
One of the biggest myths I hear is that collecting art is only for the wealthy. That couldn’t be further from the truth.
At Elisium Art, we work with artists from around the world to offer museum-quality, original artwork at a wide range of prices. Whether you’re looking for a $250 piece or building a $5,000 portfolio, we make sure every work is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity — a small but powerful promise of value and integrity.
We’re also launching an insightful blog series tailored for art curators, diving into their process, passion, and perspective on collecting and exhibiting art. These stories aim to inspire both seasoned collectors and first-time buyers alike. For more daily inspiration and access to our curated collections, follow us on Instagram at @elisium.art.official.
For those drawn to art rooted in cultural heritage and raw human expression, explore the work of Lindokuhle Tshabalala. His pieces bridge the personal and political in ways that stay with you long after viewing.

Make It Personal
Some of the most memorable collections I’ve helped build started with a single, deeply personal piece. For me, that piece was my very first art purchase—a wall sculpture from an art studio collective in Mexico called Cielito Lindo and the piece is titled: “no dejes para mañana lo que puedes hacer pasado mañana”. This is a twist to a phrase commonly used in spanish, which originally talks about the importance of taking action on things right away. The art piece has a human skeleton, lying in bed while drinking, in a room that is untidy and full of folklore and daily life symbols. For me, the whole image represents the way we as humans take everything too seriously and keep doing things that steal our happiness and time, instead of seeing life as a fleeting moment that we should spend on more meaningful things like knowing ourselves. The reason why I love the piece is because it speaks to my own journey of self-knowledge, it uses humor and images in a very cynical and crude way. The art piece has been with me for over ten years, and it is the first one I hang every time I move to a new place.
