El famoso arquitecto barroco Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt construyó los dos palacios del Belvedere a principios del siglo XVIII para que sirvieran de residencia de verano al príncipe Eugenio de Saboya (1663-1736). El Belvedere comprende el Alto y el Bajo Belvedere, además de extensos jardines. Alberga la colección más impresionante de arte austriaco. Entre sus obras más destacadas se encuentran las pinturas de Klimt «El beso» (1908) y «Judit y la cabeza de Holofernes» (1901).
