Bengaluru-based fine artist Raksha, a 2019 Visual Arts graduate from Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat, explores diverse concepts through traditional painting. Art has been her refuge from existential anxieties since youth, offering answers and a fantastical escape initially fueled by dreams and personal experiences. Her early influences ranged from Dali to Freud, the latter profoundly shifting her approach to figurative art. Now, her work draws inspiration from ancient Asian, Middle Eastern, and Indian art, alongside mythology, astrology, and everyday observations, creating surreal visual narratives.
Raksha held her debut solo show in Bangalore (2022) and participated in group exhibitions across India. Looking ahead, her practice will address global issues like war and ethics. She also envisions establishing a 2D animation studio, inspired by Studio Ghibli.

Raksha Seetharam

Driven by a profound desire for self-understanding and a means to navigate existential questions, Raksha's artistic practice continues to evolve. Her early immersion in fictional narratives has steered her work towards storytelling, where she investigates the intricate connections and shared qualities that bring us closer to our inner selves. This exploration is evident in projects like "Metonymy of Bark & Sinew," which draws compelling parallels between the structure, function, and appearance of the human body and trees.
Currently, Raksha's artistic focus delves into the relationships between ancient architecture, astrology, mythology, culture, and traditions. While her earlier creations aimed primarily to offer a surreal visual experience, she now seeks to influence the viewer's thought process by illustrating unconventional knowledge and perspectives gleaned from ancient cultures. The desire for an extraordinary visual encounter remains, but it is now interwoven with intentionality and deeper meaning.
Beyond these thematic explorations, Raksha also creates portraits and figure studies of men she admires and the everyday individuals encountered in public spaces, such as buses and metros. In these settings, she observes moments of stillness, fatigue, or unvarnished authenticity. Her evolving relationship with herself has shaped her perception of these individuals, allowing her to see beauty beyond conventional standards.
Raksha primarily employs pen and ink, oil paint, and poster/gouache colors in her work. Looking ahead, she also plans to explore the medium of sculpture, further expanding her artistic vocabulary.
